Should I practice times tables at home if school won’t drill them?

Yes. Automatic recall still matters for later work. A short daily sit on a few facts at home is enough when school skips the drill. Timed stacks and a second program are not required. You are filling a gap the classroom left open — not replacing the school book.

School can teach and still skip the hold

Many classrooms build meaning carefully and then move on. The product is shown once. The story problem comes next. There is little quiet time for the fact to become automatic. That is not always neglect. It is a crowded day.

At home you notice the freeze: 7 × 8 needs a rebuild every time, or fingers come out for a fact they “had” last month. Understanding was started at school. The hold was not finished. Times tables are where that gap shows up loudest, because later pages assume the products arrive without a pause.

You do not have to wait for the school to add a drill block. A short home sit can finish what the lesson began.

What home practice is — and is not

Keep it small. A few facts. Picture first when the hold is thin — arrays, equal groups, a sketch they can still show. Then one untimed ask until they can say it without your sentence. Stop while it is still clear.

That is enough. It is not a second curriculum bought because the school felt soft. It is not a thirty-minute mixed race meant to prove you care. Those extras often teach panic, or a different dialect from the book they already use.

Stay beside the language school already uses when you can. Your job is contact and hold, not a new program with a new setup. Five quiet minutes most days beat one long Sunday repair that ends in tears.

If they frustrate easily

Blanking on a known fact is usually a thin hold, not a missing brain. Shrink the ask. One fact. Untimed. Leave while goodwill remains. A longer sit after a blank spends tomorrow’s return.

Ask yesterday’s fact once, cold, on another day. If it is still there, you earned a neighbor — the next product in the same family. If it is gone, stay with that picture again. Do not widen the pile because school “should have” drilled more.

Enough without becoming the school
