Should I put the counters away once they can say the number bond?

Not yet. Keep the counters until they can say the whole from the parts without looking. When the spoken bond is steady without peeking, thin the objects. Write last. Early “no counters” is usually a chant, not a held picture.

Saying it while looking is not holding it

They can point at three and two and say “five.” That sounds ready. The counters are still doing the work. Take them away and the sentence often collapses into a guess or a rhyme they heard from you.

A bond they can only say with the groups in view is still attached to the table. That is fine. It is the middle of the work. It is not the signal to clear the bowl so the sitting looks more advanced.

Listen for whether they can hold both parts and the whole with their eyes off the counters for a beat. If they peek, count on fingers, or wait for your face, leave the objects out. The chant can wait.

Keep the picture until the words stand alone

Stay with one bond. Parts they can touch. Ask for the whole. Then cover the counters, or turn the bowl, and ask again. If the sentence stays, you earned a thinner prop. If it wobbles, put the counters back without a lecture. The picture is still the teacher.

Thinning is gradual. First they speak with the groups visible. Then they speak once with the groups covered. Then they can begin from the words and rebuild the groups if asked. Clearing the table on the first clean sentence skips those steps.

You are not keeping counters forever. You are keeping them until the relationship lives somewhere other than the tabletop.

Then thin — writing still waits

When they can say the bond without peeking, you can put most of the counters away for that bond. Keep a few nearby for the days the hold thins again. Do not treat “no counters” as a permanent promotion they must never reverse.

Writing still comes last. A neat bond on paper after a chant is not progress. The marks should record a thought they already own in speech and picture. If they reach for the page and freeze without the bowl, bring the objects back. The page did not fail. The props left too soon.

The early clear-out

Parents clear counters because the sitting looks babyish, or because the book’s next page is numerals only, or because a sibling works without them. None of those reasons means the picture is held.

A chant without a picture will not carry the next bond. It will only get faster. Keep the objects until the spoken whole stands without looking. Then thin. Write last.
