Number Bonds — parts that make a whole

Number bonds are the visual language of early Singapore Math: a whole composed of parts. Children find a missing part, or study every bond for a target number, until addition and subtraction feel like rearranging what they can already see.

How it works

  1. See a whole and one or more parts — or an empty space where a part belongs.
  2. Name the missing number that completes the bond.
  3. Explore all pairs that make a chosen whole when you want breadth instead of a single prompt.
  4. Work unhurriedly; accuracy and understanding matter more than speed.

The mathematical idea

Part–whole relationships underwrite addition, subtraction, and later algebraic thinking. Knowing that 7 is 3 and 4 (and 2 and 5, and so on) is more durable than memorizing isolated sums. Bonds also prepare “making 10” and other mental strategies used in Singapore Math.

Why it helps

Parents following Primary Mathematics, Dimensions, or similar programs already teach bonds on paper. This activity offers calm digital practice aligned with that language — not a competing method, and not a points carnival. Useful for review, summer, or steady reinforcement between lessons.

Age & skill range. Kindergarten through about grade 5, depending on the size of the wholes. Start small; grow the numbers with the child.
