Should times tables practice be timed?

Not while the hold is thin. Time a fact after it arrives cold without a rebuild. Untimed short sits build the recall. A timer on a shaky product teaches panic, not fluency. The clock measures a hold that is already there. It does not build one.

Timing feels like fluency

A school sheet with a clock looks serious. Parents hear “automatic” and reach for seconds. The honest urge is to prove the table is ready by racing it.

That race only works when the product already arrives without a rebuild. If 7 × 8 still needs fingers, a sketch, or your face, the timer is not practice. It is a public test of what is still thin. They watch the clock instead of the number. The next ask is worse because the first one already felt like failure.

Fluency is beginning the next related item without looking at you. Seconds can come later. They are not the teaching.

Build the hold first

Keep the sit short and untimed. Picture first when the product is shaky — equal groups, an array, a sketch they can still show. Then one ask until they can say it without your sentence. Stop while it is still clear.

Ask that fact cold on another day. If it arrives, you earned a neighbor in the same family. If it wobbles, put the picture back for that one fact. Do not widen the pile and do not start the clock to “push through.”

A mixed timed stack is a panic test with more cards. It measures rust across twenty thin holds at once. It does not make any of them steady.

When a timer can wait in the drawer no longer

Once a fact arrives cold — no rebuild, no peek at your face — a brief timed check can confirm what you already know. Even then, keep it light. One fact or a small family. Not a full grid under pressure. Not every day.

If the timed check fails, the answer is not more seconds. It is untimed contact again until the hold returns. Put the clock away without a lecture.

School may still time. Your home sit does not have to copy that pressure while the table is still forming. Home can be where the recall gets built. The stopwatch can stay for later.

Enough without the race

Times tables need contact. They do not need a race to prove contact happened. Untimed short sits build the hold. Time only what already arrives cold.
