How do I help my child with fractions when I make it worse?

Stop explaining. When a parent’s words make fractions worse, the child usually already has too many methods in the air. Sit with the picture the book already uses — one stuck idea, something they can fold or draw, then the numbers. You do not need a new program, and you do not need to become a second teacher with a different dialect.
A parent on Reddit recently asked for help because a 5th grader is stuck on fractions, and every time they try to help they confuse him more. This is very common.
Why your help turns to fog
Fractions are a part–whole idea that later wears a lot of clothing: equivalent fractions, unlike denominators, mixed numbers, a procedure for each. A fifth grader who is stuck is often missing the first picture, not the latest algorithm. The parent, who remembers school as invert-and-multiply, starts talking. The book is showing a bar. The child now has two languages for one number.
That is not a failure of care. It is two honest methods in the same ten minutes. The child cannot tell which one is the lesson.
The repair is not a better speech. It is fewer words, and the same picture the page already asked for.
One stuck idea
Do not open the whole chapter. Name the one thing that stalled: halves and fourths of the same whole, or equivalent fractions, or adding with unlike denominators. That is the only work for this sitting.
If you do not know which idea it is, look at the last problem they could do without you. The next one is the stuck idea. Everything after it can wait.
Fraction Sense is for seeing equal parts of a whole — the floor under the procedures. If that floor is missing, no amount of talking about “the bottom number” will hold.
Fold, then the bar, then the numbers
Put the pencil down. Take a strip of paper. Fold it so a half is a thing they can hold. Fold again so a fourth is two of those halves, or four of the original whole. Say only what you see: “This whole is one. These two parts are the same.”
Then draw the same story as a bar, the way the book draws it. The whole is 1. The parts are equal. Write the fraction last, as a name for a part they already touched.
If the book uses a number bond for a whole split into parts, use that bond. Do not invent a pizza lecture the page did not ask for. Do not say “just multiply the bottoms” unless that is already the lesson’s last step, and the picture is already clear.
Two problems together. Then they try the next one while you stay in the room and do not talk unless they ask. If they stall, point at the fold or the bar, not at the answer.
Ten unhurried minutes is a real session. Stop while the picture is still clean.
What not to add
Do not add a second method from your own school years. Do not add a video that uses different pictures. Do not add a tutor marketplace on day one unless you are already stretched past sitting at the table. A tutor can help later. Brief them the same way: one idea, the book’s pictures, no race.

That is help. It will not look like a finished fifth-grade chapter. It will look like one idea that finally stayed still.
Sit with the picture
You are not a bad teacher for making it worse. You were doing two jobs at once. Choose the book’s picture. Choose one idea. Fold, draw, then write. Leave the rest of the chapter for another day.
The child who got confused by help does not need a louder explanation. They need the same whole, held still, until the fraction is a name for something they can already see.
