Fraction Sense — see the size, not only the digits
Fraction sense begins with equal parts of a whole. Before heavy algorithms, children need to build fractions, compare them, and recognize equivalence when two different writings name the same amount.
How it works
- Partition a whole into equal parts and name a fraction of that whole.
- Build or adjust fractions and compare their sizes visually.
- Notice when two fractions represent the same portion.
- Keep the pace gentle — the goal is a correct mental picture.
The mathematical idea
A fraction is a number, not two decorations stacked with a bar. Equal partitioning, unit fractions, and equivalence (for example 1/2 and 2/4) are the conceptual core. Singapore Math develops these ideas with careful visuals before abstract computation.
Why it helps
Fractions are a common stumbling point in upper elementary. Structure-focused practice helps classical and Singapore Math students who can “do steps” but do not yet see magnitude. Better sense now means fewer tears when operations arrive later.
Age & skill range. Roughly grades 2–6, depending on whether the focus is unit fractions, comparison, or equivalence. Match the session to what the child is meeting in lessons.
