What if I get home late and the after-school math window is already gone?

Do a smaller sit if they can still begin, or skip. Do not double tomorrow to pay a debt. The window is not a bill. Keep the same book. Never a second program. After-school math is a short return to today’s page while the picture is still warm. When you walk in late, that warmth may already be gone.
The window is not a bill
A missed sitting feels like something owed. The page is still in the bag. The evening is still technically “after school.” The honest urge is to collect: ten minutes now, even if they are already in pajamas, even if the picture from the lesson is cold.
That collection is how a short sit becomes a second period at 8 p.m. It is also how tomorrow gets two lists. The window was a chance to return to today’s picture. It was not a quota. You cannot store it and spend it later at twice the size.
Keep the spine you opened. A new program will not recover a late night. It will add a dialect to a child who is already done.
If they can still begin
Look at them, not the clock you missed. If they can still start one ordinary item from the last picture they met, do that. One item. Stop while it is still clear. The table should be smaller when you stand up.
That is not “making up” the sit. It is using what is left of the return. Do not try to finish the leftover packet because you feel guilty about the hour.
If the window is gone
Skip. Say so without a lecture. The book will be there in the morning, or tomorrow after school, at the usual small size. Skipping one evening is not a hole in the year. Doubling tomorrow is.
If they are already melting, food and bed are the sitting. Math can wait for a picture that can hold.
Do not assign the missed page as weekend catch-up. That is the debt idea in a different shirt.
Tomorrow stays the same size
The repair is cadence, not volume. Tomorrow: today’s page, a few items, stop while it is still clear. Not today’s page plus last night’s page plus a worksheet you printed in the car.
If last night’s picture is still the one that matters, begin there — one startable item in the same book. That is placement, not a penalty.
If the leftover was groups
Some late evenings the bag holds a matching or sorting page they never reached. If they can still sit, Match & Sort can keep that same seeing for a few quiet minutes: no score, no timer, beside the book, not instead of it. If they cannot sit, leave it. Groups work is not a reason to collect a debt at bedtime.
If the leftover was not groups, the cards and extras stay shut.
Enough
You will know you treated the window honestly when you either did one small item or you skipped, and tomorrow’s sit is still small. You will know the debt won when the list grew.
Late is late. Smaller, or skip. Same book. That is the whole night.
