How do I start kindergarten math with Dimensions Math KA?
- parenting
- homeschool
- classical math
You start kindergarten math with Dimensions Math KA by sitting with today’s page. Match & Sort sits beside if the page is groups. It is not a second program, and it is not official Singapore Math. Open the book. Stay with its pictures.
Open the book you chose
Dimensions Math KA is a kindergarten book. Starting it means putting that book on the table and doing the page in front of you. Not the catalog. Not a second cover bought because this one looked thin. The pictures in KA are the language you are agreeing to use.
A parent often starts by shopping: is this Singapore enough, should we add a workbook, do we need an app that matches kindergarten. That shopping is how a second program arrives before the first sitting. Sit first. The page will tell you what today is.
The first sitting does not need a plan for the year. It needs the objects the lesson already uses, and you beside them. If you do not know how far KA goes, you can find out later. Today is the page.
You do not have to finish KA at a school’s pace. You do not have to treat it as an official Singapore Math course. You have to sit with the page that is actually open.
What starting is not
It is not a placement test. It is not writing numerals until the paper looks like school. It is not a stack of extras in case the book is not enough.
If the first pages feel small, they are supposed to. Kindergarten in this book is objects and groups, then the marks that name them. Adding another program because the page looked easy is how two methods sit on the same afternoon.
A second kindergarten app, a printable pack, or a cousin’s workbook will teach a different setup. KA will still be waiting when you come back, and the child will have two pictures for the same sitting.
If a page is a cliff, you do not switch books. You stay in KA and go back one step until the child can begin. Starting is placement inside this spine, not a new purchase.
If the page is groups
Some KA pages are about matching, odd one out, two groups. Those days the table already has a job. Match & Sort can sit beside that page: same kind of seeing, no score, no timer. It belongs next to the book. It does not replace it.
If the page is not groups, leave Match & Sort closed. The book is the teacher. The extra sitting is only for the days the lesson is already about sorting.
Flash Cards can wait. A later thin fact is a different job.
Enough to have started
You have started when today’s page is on the table, the child can begin it from the picture, and you have not opened a second program to support KA. That is the whole start. Dimensions Math KA is the spine. The rest of the catalog can stay shut.
