Place Value — the structure of our number system
Place value is how base-ten numbers carry meaning: ones, tens, hundreds, and beyond. This activity invites children to build and read numbers with clear units, and optionally to regroup — ten ones becoming a ten — so the notation matches the quantity.
How it works
- Compose or interpret a number using hundreds, tens, and ones.
- Notice how each place is worth ten of the place to its right.
- When regrouping is offered, exchange ten ones for one ten (and similar trades) to keep representations standard.
- Read the finished number aloud or match it to its digits.
The mathematical idea
All standard algorithms rest on place value. Understanding that 34 is three tens and four ones — not “three and four” side by side by accident — prevents fragile calculation. Regrouping makes carrying and borrowing conceptual rather than magical.
Why it helps
Singapore Math and classical arithmetic both insist on firm place-value foundations before multi-digit work. Calm practice here supports homework, remediation, and confidence for students who can count but still misread multi-digit numbers.
